“Flexible Reach” Allows Display Advertisers More Targeting Options

A new AdWords update is allowing for advertisers to use moer than one targeting method at the ad group level with a new feature called “Flexible Reach.”

Previously one could only select those targeting methods at the campaign level. The update is being rolled out to all accounts, starting today.

Bad Ads and Improved PPC Performance

Search Engine Watch covered an interesting news story a few days ago. They did some A/B testing with ads using an unconventional idea.

They took an ad and made some ‘adjustments’ to the spelling of the ad while following the AdWords Spelling and Grammar Guidelines. The results were fantastic. Have a look at the two ads they used:

Google Lowers Maps API Cost

Back in January, Google decided to charge websites making use of their Google Maps API $4 for every 1,000 visitors over 25,000 but today that cost has been reduced by 88% to 50 cents. In addition to the drop in price, Google is also simplifying the Maps usage limitations, applying the same pricing to Styled Maps and the default Google Maps.

Six Keys to Founding a Successful Startup

I like to watch entrepreneurs run companies.  Founders are a special breed among them. The good ones share a number of common traits. I recently sat down with Todd Wilkinson and chatted with him about what he thinks it takes to found a successful startup. He boiled it down to 6 key things, and I think that in it-self is telling. They don’t appear in any particular order.

 

 

  1. Keep your eye on the big picture, and your hand on the rudder.

You have to keep telling yourself and the team you have about what that is and why it’s important. You and your staff need to be passionate about the goal you have.  That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t care about details. You should. But you should never get so hung up on the small stuff that you let your focus drift from the strategic direction you’ve set for your company.

Google Updates Maps for Mobile

It should come as no surprise that one of the most common uses for a mobile phone these days is to search for local information. In the US, nearly 95% of smartphone users have reported that they’ve used their phone in such a way.

In an effort to enable advertisers to connect with potential customers through mobile search more efficiently, Google has redone the local ads formats on their mobile Maps application. So far, the testing on these new formats has increased CTR by up to 100%.
